In brief

A Roman Catholic Church in Selly Park named after King Edward the Confessor (b. 1003, r 1042, d 1066). He was the only King of England to be made a Saint by the Pope. The church was built from 1902 until the 1930s in the Decorated Gothic Style by H T Sandy.

St Edward's Catholic Church - history

Architect was H T Sandy, the naves and aisles of St Edward's was built in 1901-02.

The sanctuary followed by 1926, and flanking porches in 1937-38 by E Bower Norris.

Built of a reddish-brown brick, with old fashioned stepped lancets in the aisles.

The pews probably dates to 1902, the Reredoses and hanging rood date to 1926.

The church was named after Edward the Confessor, the last major King of England before the Conquest of 1066 (not counting King Harold).

The revered King was later canonised by the Pope and became a Saint.

The church is also called the Catholic Church of Saint Edward the Confessor.

Statue of Saint (King) Edward the Confessor

Facing Bournbrook Road is a statue of Saint (King) Edward the Confessor.

It is similar to statues of King's found on cathedrals around the country, such as at Lichfield.
