In brief

The Shirley Baptist Church congregation had existed since 1797 and used to meet at a pub on the corner of Stratford Road and Olton Road. They moved in 1845 to a purpose built building on what was then Sandy Lane, near Powergen (demolished in 2017), now Solihull Retirement Village (opened in 2021). There current building on the Stratford Road was built in 1910.

Shirley Baptist Church - history

Shirley Baptist Church has existed as a congregation since 1797 and the first meeting place was in a former pub on the corner of Stratford Road and Olton Road.

In 1845 the congregation moved to its own building on what was then Sandy Lane, close to the former Powergen site (demolished in 2017), now Solihull Retirement Village (opened in 2021). 

They currently worship in the distinctive building on the Stratford Road at the Birmingham end of Shirley, which was erected in 1910.

It is a wonderful blend of an older building with a modern interior. The church is affiliated to the Baptist Union of Great Britain and is a member of the Evangelical Alliance.

In 2013, new purpose-built facilities facing the pedestrianised area of Parkgate were opened.

These included new offices and meeting rooms, a sports hall and other large halls, plus Kairos Coffee and the Family Support Centre.
