St Barnabas' Church was built in 1822-23 by Thomas Rickman, near the High Street in Erdington. There was a fire in 2007, that led to a rebuilding. The church was reopened in 2012.

In brief

The Parish Church of Erdington, it was built from 1822 to 1823 as a Commissioners' Gothick church by Thomas Rickman, in the Decorated style. J A Chatwin added a chancel and transepts in 1883. But was a major fire in 2007. But was fully restored with a modern extension by 2012.

The church was designed by Thomas Rickman, and built as a chapel of ease in Erdington from 1822 to 1823.

The church was famous for it's 16 stained glass windows which were also design by Thomas Rickman.

It was consecrated on the 23rd July 1824.

It was built by the Commissioners at a cost of £5000 (about £470,000 in 2021).

A district chapelry was assigned to the church in 1858.

There was a fire on the morning of 4th October 2007, and the building was severely damaged.

Rebuilding of the church began in January 2011 and was completed in 2012.

The Bishop of Birmingham re-dedicated the building in December 2012.

You can still see some fire damage on the stonework from the Erdington High Street, next to the modern extension.

The Big Sleuth Birmingham 2017

During the summer of 2017, their was a trail around Birmingham, Sandwell, Dudley and Solihull of painted bears called The Big Sleuth. This was on for 10 weeks from July 2017. After which they were all sold at auction for charity.

At St Barnabas Church was Wyrley McBear Face by the artist Rebecca Cresswell and 'DJ' working with Witton Lodge Community Association. The sponsor and funding was by the Witton Lodge Community Association.
