The BMI has been a key part of the city's cultural life since 1854 when it was founded by an Act of Parliament for the 'Diffusion and Advancement of Science, Literature and Art amongst all Classes of Persons resident in Birmingham and Midland Counties'. Charles Dickens, an avid supporter of working class education played a major part in the establishment of the BMI. Dickens held public readings of his Christmas stories at the BMI at a descending ticket price so people of all classes to attend.   

Built in 1899 to the designs of architects Jethro Cossins, F. B. Peacock and Ernest Bewley, this is a magnificent Grade II listed building.
