NEW LIFE AT 92 NEW STREET
92-93 New Street, built between 1865-69, is to be given a much-needed facelift and brought into full use.
Large portions of the site are derelict void space, including part of the auditorium of the former ABC cinema, which closed in 1982.
Bringing the building back to full usage and securing its long-term survival, the building will accommodate offices and subsequent amenities – showers, lifts, sustainable M&E, terraces – on its upper levels, with refurbished retail and restaurants at street level.
To Pinfold Street, facing onto New Street Station, its street-level relationship will be reactivated to provide a more positive feature for visitors.
While its façade will be retained and enhanced with uplighters, its attic levels will be rebuilt and windows restored where they have been blanked off.
Other works will see its structural stability increased with new internal floors; the retention of the Victorian ‘Club Rooms’; plus, the retention (where practicable) of some historic elements of its time as a cinema (1929).
