King Henry VIII School - A Coventry & West Midlands Gem!

King Henry VIII School was established in 1545  in Coventry, as a Free Grammar School. But by 1878 that was no longer the case. Now an Independent school, built 1885. Grade II listed.

In brief

Founded in 1545 by John Hales as a Free Grammar School under letters patent of King Henry VIII in Coventry. Initially the school was located at the Whitefriars' Monastery, but relocated to the former St John's Hospital in 1558, where it remained for more than 300 years before moving to the south side of the city in 1885 to the present Warwick Road site. It is now an Independent day school from ages 3 to 18.

King Henry VIII School - history

The Warwick Road site in Coventry, is not that far from the railway station. The first building you come across is King Henry VIII Junior School.

These buildings were built in 1885 by Edward Burgess, later enlarge in 1889 and 1936. Restored after bomb damage in 1950.

Built in the Tudor style of red brick, stone dressings and a tiled roof.

Foundation of the school dates back to the 23rd July 1545 by the Clerk of the Hanaper, John Hales as the Free Grammar School.

From 1545 to 1558 the school was based at Whitefriars' Monastery, before moving to the former St John's Hospital. Where they remained for 327 years before relocating to the Warwick Road site in Coventry, where they remain to this day.

The Warwick Road site has been Grade II listed since 1974, but the school was no longer a 'Free Grammar School' by 1878, and became an independent insitution.
